From Gift Shopping to Self-Discovery: How a Sheer Dress for a Friend's 50th Modified Her Style

Updated: Sep 15, 2025

Styling opens the door to endless creativity, but it's a nuanced art that’s far from imposing my personal taste on others. Every individual has a unique sense of style, and my role as a stylist is to help them express that identity with clarity and confidence. One of the most rewarding parts of this job is the initial meeting with clients, when I get a first impression of their style and personality based on how they dress, how they carry themselves, and how they articulate their fashion preferences.

Take Janie, one of my recent clients, as a perfect example. Janie was on the hunt for an elegant yet modest dress to wear to her friend’s upcoming 50th birthday celebration. Before our appointment, I prepared a selection of dresses from various brands. When Janie arrived, she shared with me that AllSaints was her go-to for fits that suited her figure best.

From our first discussion, it was clear Janie wanted something that felt elegant yet understated, a look that could strike the right balance between being dressy and feeling modest. She emphasised her preference for styles that would keep her chest covered but didn’t want a design that would make her feel overly conservative or, as she put it, "underdressed." I understood immediately—it was about finding something that allowed her to feel both stylish and true to her personal taste without compromising on her comfort or confidence.

We explored a variety of options within her preferred range, eventually honing in on pieces that incorporated sheer layers. This was the ideal solution, as it offered her the coverage she desired while introducing a playful touch of sophistication through the translucent elements. The sheerness lent the dresses an air of elegance, showing hints of skin in a tasteful, layered way. Sheer fabrics are great for adding visual interest to an outfit without needing to resort to extra fabric or complex designs.

As we worked through different pieces, Janie grew more confident and excited, trying on dress after dress with a visible sense of delight. By the end of our appointment, she had not only found the perfect outfit for the birthday celebration but also discovered a small collection of sheer tops and dresses that added diversity to her wardrobe. She realised how these new pieces could elevate her style and bring out her confidence.

Beyond finding a dress for a specific event, this experience transformed Janie’s wardrobe. She left with a newfound sense of excitement about her personal style, equipped with pieces that could carry her into future special occasions. We had curated a selection that wasn’t just a quick fix for a one-time event but rather a set of staples that embodied her unique style, versatility, and confidence.

For me, this experience highlighted the depth of styling—it’s not simply about choosing clothes; it's about helping someone see the potential in themselves and their wardrobe.
